New life at Lucas: Ducklings hatch in the courtyard

For several years, mallards have been returning to nest in the Lucas courtyard. This spring, we have two nests. One mother is busy protecting her young ducklings. The other eggs should be hatching soon. Please consider sending a bag of cracked corn to school to help nourish the ducks!

Chili dinner benefits IC Music Auxiliary

A chili dinner on Friday, May 4, at Lucas will benefit the Iowa City Music Auxiliary. This is the organization that provides all band instruments to Iowa City elementary students, including our Lucas musicians. Campfire USA's local Discovery Club is sponsoring the dinner to raise funds for our music programs. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under. They are available from Mrs. Denniston in the Lucas office or by contacting Lily Tate at 354-1767 or LJWTate@gmail.com

If you can't attend the event but would still like to support the cause, contact Lily Tate to donate time, money or ingredients.

A Mighty Fun Night!

A huge thank you to our Lucas Fun Night chairs, Amy Greazel and Sarah Holmes, and all the room leaders and other volunteers, for a fabulous Fun Night on Friday! We had more families than ever come out for an evening of fun and games to support our school.

With the help of all the volunteers and the support of our Lucas families, we raised nearly $6,200 for our school! We are also expecting an additional $500 donation from Kohls, and all funds will go directly to needed programs and equipment at Lucas.

Congratulations to Mr. Ryan's class for selling the most raffle tickets per student and winning the popcorn party. Raffle prize winners are posted outside the Lucas office and prizes can be picked up there.

Mighty Hawks sure know how to have a Mighty Fun Night!

Helping out with Fun Night is a piece of cake

The Fun Night committee is seeking cake donations for the cake walk game rooms. You don't have to be the next Cake Boss to contribute to the success of this event. Please bring your donated cakes to the school office between 3 and 5 p.m. on Friday, April 20. Disposable cake pans are strongly suggested, as pans will not be returned. The classroom that brings in the most cakes wins a Popsicle party! Contact Amy at dagreazel1@msn.com or 530-8290 for more information or to confirm that you will bring a cake.

If you're not a baker, but wish to help in other ways, please contact Sarah Holmes at  smhsmh1919@yahoo.com

Thanks to everyone for helping make Fun Night a success!

Fun Night and fundraising on agenda tonight at PTO

With Fun Night coming up on Friday, tonight's PTO meeting will focus on those final details for making the event a success. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. with babysitting available in the Kindergarten classroom.

We'll also hear from Principal Julia Burton about how the ICCSD fundraising office can help support our "Make a Mighty Difference"campaign as well as an update plans for our outdoor learning space.

Hope to see you there!

Book Fair sales net 105 new books for Lucas library

Thank you to all who attended or assisted with last week's Book Fair and Art Show, both of which were great successes!

Lucas Librarian Connie McCain reports that book fair browsers purchased more than $3,600 in books, which means our school library will receive 105 free books (worth more than $1,000) as well as $400 in cash for our nonfiction science book updates. We also have a bank of about $700 in Scholastic Dollars for future purchases (for example, this is how we got our “Wild About Books” rug in the library and a full class set of thesauruses in the past).

Happy reading to all!
