New 7th grade immunization requirements

Per Iowa law, at the start of the 2017-18 school year there will be two immunizations required for 7th grade entry. These immunizations are Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis/whooping cough) and meningococcal (to prevent meningitis, a bacteria that infects the brain, blood and spinal cord). The meningococcal shot is a new requirement for the 2017-18 school year. The Tdap shot has been required since 2013-14. Some students will have already received these shots during their regular physical exams. Please check your child’s immunization record to find out if they had the Tdap booster and Meningitis shot. Please turn in the documentation to school if the shots were received.

According to the new meningococcal shot state law, students that have not received the immunization will not meet the mandatory immunization requirement and no grace period to catch-up will be given. (There is a short grace period for the Tdap shot however). Students will not be able to come to school on the first day of the 2017-18 school year if parents have not provided documentation that their child received the meningococcal shot. Parents should call their child’s health care provider now to make appointments for these immunizations. Johnson County Public Health also provides the immunizations at no cost to children with or without health insurance. Please call 319-356- 6042 to make an appointment.

Feel free to contact the school nurse at your child’s elementary school if you have questions or need assistance getting the required immunizations.

Grades 3-5 ELP Parent Nomination

The yearly screening of students for participation in the Extended Learning Program (ELP), the elementary program for gifted and very high ability students, is underway for the 2017-2018 school year. This program is appropriate for students who are at the highest academic levels in their grade. Students can enter this screening pool by Iowa Assessments scores, teacher nomination or parent nomination. An informational meeting for parents will be held in the Little Theater at West High School on March 6, 2017 at 7:00 PM.

More information is available on the district website www.iowacityschools.org: Departments> Curriculum> Curriculum Areas> Extended Learning Program (ELP)> Elementary Services.

Only grades three through five are included in this screening process. Kindergarten and first grade students are being screened for ELP services through in-class lessons and collaboration with the classroom teacher throughout the school year.

All second graders will be screened in Spring 2017. Parents will receive notification about second grade screening when it is scheduled at their child’s school. No parent or teacher nominations are necessary for grades K-2.

If you would like to nominate your third, fourth or fifth grade child to be tested for ELP services, please complete a parent information form. Forms will be available online between February 20 and March 9, 2017 at https://goo.gl/forms/WcQSp5kc1bJFcBc83. Paper forms will be available in the school office during the same time. No forms will be accepted after March 9, 2017 at 4:00 PM.
